Alex’s Story from lock up to Lighthouse

“I’m Alex and I’m angry. I’m pissed off that I never had the family that my friends got. I was one year old when I was removed from my parents because they weren’t able to look after me. I got moved around in foster care over 30 times in eight years. In one year, I was even moved seven times.

When I was 15 I started hanging out with the wrong crowd who were involved in drugs and crime. I stopped going to school and spent more time with these friends, I even started breaking into houses.

Eventually I got caught and the judge was going to lock me away from 18 months if it wasn’t for Lighthouse. Luckily I was rescued and released on bail with Lighthouse as my primary carer. At the time I thought this would be just another placement, another foster home. I thought this place would become my number 31.

I’ve been with Lighthouse now for 12 months and I can’t say it’s been easy.

I kept going back to my mates, expecting everyone to give up on me. My Carers helped me to understand the consequences hanging out with that group of friends and they supported me to find other interests. At the start I didn’t want their help, but Lighthouse never gave up on me.

At Lighthouse I found a real home. I had my own room, my own things and people who cared about me. The best part was that I knew I wasn’t leaving any time soon. I could start thinking about my future.

I made good friends in the Lighthouse community and my Carers helped me to start making positive choices. I’m about to start a hospitality course and I’m attending all of my weekly counselling session at Lighthouse. I know it’s not going to be easy bringing up my past and addressing my issues but I know that Lighthouse will be there for me every step of the way.

I thought life was gonna suck for me and that I would always be in and out of jail. But now I have dreams and the future is possible.

Thanks for reading my story.
